The Story

Dark canvases surround the chapel with deep purples, blacks, and near-invisible shifts. At first they seem closed. Then the eyes adjust. The darkness opens slowly. Rothko creates a space for grief, meditation, and wordless encounter. The paintings do not console quickly. They stay.

II

The Technique

Large canvases with layered dark pigments, matte surfaces, and subtle tonal variation designed for a chapel environment.

III

Hidden Symbols

The darkness suggests mourning, infinity, and spiritual stripping-away. Meaning emerges through duration.

IV

The World It Was Born In

Commissioned for an interfaith chapel during Rothko’s late career, amid his increasing interest in tragic and sacred space.

V

The Artist's Voice

I’m interested only in expressing basic human emotions.
