The Story

A couple kneels at the edge of a flowered field, wrapped in gold. The man bends over the woman; her face turns toward the kiss with closed eyes. The image is radiant, but not simple. Love appears as shelter, pattern, surrender, and edge. One step beyond them, the ground falls away.

The Technique

Oil and gold leaf on canvas, combining painted flesh with ornamental mosaic-like pattern.

III

Hidden Symbols

Gold suggests sacredness and luxury. Rectangular and circular motifs distinguish masculine and feminine energies. The edge hints at love’s risk.

IV

The World It Was Born In

Klimt’s “Golden Phase” drew from Byzantine mosaics, especially Ravenna, and from Vienna’s decorative culture.

The Artist's Voice

Whoever wants to know something about me... ought to look carefully at my pictures.
Gustav Klimt
