The Story

Christ appears above, judging the world, but Fra Angelico’s imagination is drawn as much to the saved as to the condemned. On one side, the blessed dance in a meadow led by angels. Paradise looks like a garden where fear has ended. The damned descend elsewhere into darkness, but the painting’s deepest memory is the ring of figures moving lightly together, as if salvation were not a courtroom verdict but a homecoming.

The Technique

Tempera and gold on panel. The composition divides judgment into ordered zones while using delicate color and miniature-like detail.

III

Hidden Symbols

The central tombs mark resurrection. The dance of the blessed symbolizes harmony restored. Angels guide souls as companions rather than distant officials.

The World It Was Born In

Last Judgment images remained central to medieval and Renaissance devotion, but Fra Angelico softened terror with Dominican hope and pastoral grace.
