The Story

Before the choir opened into radiance, the west front announced a new public face for sacred power. Three portals welcomed the faithful like three mouths of scripture. Sculptures framed the entrance, teaching the stories of judgment, kingship, and salvation before a person ever stepped inside. It was a threshold made dramatic. The church did not wait quietly for visitors; it addressed them in stone.

The Technique

The facade used carved portals, rose-window planning, and a more ordered vertical composition than earlier Romanesque fronts. Its sculpture was integrated into architecture as part of a unified entrance program.
