The Story

Christ has just spoken: one of you will betray me. The table erupts. Hands open, bodies recoil, faces turn in disbelief. Only Christ remains still at the center, isolated by the calm geometry of the room. Leonardo paints not the meal, but the instant after a sentence changes everything. You stand before it and feel time suspended between accusation and denial.

The Technique

Leonardo experimented with tempera and oil on dry plaster rather than true fresco, allowing subtle modeling but causing rapid deterioration. Linear perspective converges behind Christ’s head.

Hidden Symbols

The groups of three apostles echo the Trinity. Christ’s body forms a triangle of stability. Bread and wine quietly foreshadow the Eucharist and sacrifice.
