The Story

David stands before the battle, not after it. The sling rests almost casually over his shoulder, but his eyes are fixed. His body is young, beautiful, tense with thought. Michelangelo gives you the moment before action, when courage is still private. The giant is unseen, which makes the sculpture larger. You stand where Goliath might stand, and David looks past you into destiny.

II

The Technique

Carved from a single flawed block of Carrara marble abandoned by earlier sculptors. Michelangelo used contrapposto, anatomical precision, and enlarged hands and head for expressive force.

III

Hidden Symbols

David represents civic courage, intelligence over brute strength, and Florence’s self-image as a small republic facing larger powers.

IV

The World It Was Born In

Placed originally outside the Palazzo Vecchio, David became a political emblem during a tense period of Florentine republican identity.

V

The Artist's Voice

I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.” attributed.
Michelangelo Buonarroti

What Came After
