The Story

Above, Christ rises in light between Moses and Elijah. Below, a possessed boy twists in anguish while his family begs the apostles for help. The painting holds two worlds at once: divine radiance and human desperation. Raphael died before it was fully complete, and it stood near his body at his funeral. It feels like a final statement: glory matters, but so does the suffering at the foot of the mountain.

The Technique

Oil tempera on wood, combining High Renaissance balance with dramatic contrasts that anticipate Mannerism and Baroque intensity.

III

Hidden Symbols

The upper light reveals divinity; the lower darkness shows human need. The pointing gestures link earthly suffering to heavenly power.

IV

The World It Was Born In

Commissioned by Cardinal Giulio de’ Medici, the work belongs to a Church facing growing tension just before the Reformation’s full force.

The Artist's Voice

Here lies Raphael, by whom Nature feared to be conquered while he lived.” epitaph by Pietro Bembo.
