The Story

The flowers stand in a vase, yellow upon yellow, some blooming, some wilting, some already collapsing. Van Gogh painted them for Gauguin’s room in Arles, hoping to make a house of artists. The picture glows with welcome, but also with fragility. Friendship, like flowers, must be tended.

II

The Technique

Oil on canvas with thick impasto and limited yellow palette. Van Gogh explores variation within one dominant color range.

Hidden Symbols

Sunflowers suggest gratitude, warmth, friendship, and the cycle from bloom to decay.
