The Story

In darkness, Saturn grips a mutilated body and eats. His eyes are wild, terrified, almost animal. This was painted on the wall of Goya’s own house, not for public display. It feels like a nightmare discovered after the dreamer has left the room. Power here does not rule. It consumes what it fears.

II

The Technique

Oil mural transferred to canvas, part of the Black Paintings. Rough handling, dark palette, and violent simplification create psychological force.

III

Hidden Symbols

Saturn represents time, tyranny, and fear of succession. Devouring the child becomes power destroying its own future.

IV

The World It Was Born In

Goya’s late years followed war, repression, illness, and political disappointment. The Black Paintings reflect private darkness and public trauma.

V

The Artist's Voice

The sleep of reason produces monsters.
Francisco Goya
